Smelly Armpits and Body Odor – Causes, Prevention, and Natural Remedies
Stinking armpits are a natural drawback of interaction between bacteria and sweat. However, excessive food intake, hormonal changes, or body infections can also be responsible. As the saying goes, “Prevention is always better than cure.” Identifying the cause and symptoms is the first step toward managing odor effectively.
Sweat is a natural secretion by the body’s hormones to cool down the body. It can be odorless or odorous depending on your health. While you can’t stop sweating entirely, you can manage odor with proper care and natural remedies.

Remedy 1: Lemon Juice
Wash your armpits with soap, then rub a quarter of a lemon over the area in circular motion. Do this at night before bed and wash in the morning. For sensitive skin, dilute 1 part water to 2 parts lemon. Moisturize afterward with Vaseline or petroleum jelly. Lemon acts as a natural astringent and targets bacteria.
Remedy 2: Chickpea Flour Scrub
- 1 tablespoon chickpea flour
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1/4 teaspoon Vaseline or vitamin E
Mix to form a paste, apply to armpits, let it dry, then gently wash with water. Use once a week to remove dead skin cells and reduce odor.
Remedy 3: Coconut Oil & Salt Scrub
Mix 1 tablespoon coconut oil with 1/2 teaspoon salt. Apply to armpits to scrub gently. This removes odor and leaves skin smooth.
Remedy 4: Homemade Moisturizer
- 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel
- 1 vitamin E capsule
- 1 teaspoon sunflower oil
- 1 teaspoon black seed oil
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1/2 teaspoon lavender or fragrance oil (optional)
Mix and store in a cream jar. Apply after scrubs to repair skin and lock in moisture. Lasts 2–6 months depending on aloe vera type.
Remedy 5: Zinc Oxide Cream
Apply zinc oxide cream (commonly found in nappy rash creams) under armpits after washing. It provides fast odor control and freshness for the day.
